Rock the Catwalk!

I dislike rambling on about my work.. hope I don't sound like a pretentious eejit.
Anyway THIIISSS my friends...(of which so far count= nil hahaha I dont care.. look at me go... I'm a typing madman) is Rock the Catwalk!

It's an event my fourth year class are organising on 9/12/09 to rasie money for the New Designers Exhibition next year in London after we graduate! costing a WHOPPPIIINNNNG 12 thowsand pownds. gasp. So we've already raised 900 from our 'Rags to Riches' pop up vintage and second hand shop we set up in the uni.. twas fab! but now it's onto this... we've got lots of people from the uni modelling clothes from local boutiques and charity shops to promote local businesses, with live djs all night and entry to the club we're holding it in. So should be a good night to celebrate dissertation handin! Bad news is we have our end of semester reviews the next day where we have to present our work to tutors and classmates... as if I wasnt nervous enough....

So if anyone ever see's this..... please come!!!!

Printyprints

Just thought i'd whack some photos of older work up, I specialise in printed/ mixed media textiles so just to get an idea of past projects.....
whack number one:
V&A quilt project 2008

This brief was very much about storytelling through craft, bringing quilting into a modern context. Samples geared towards a final quilt had to be produced, so these are some of the parts of my mock up quilt! I had lots of fun doing this one because I was looking at childhood art as a means of expression, so I got to sift through all my old drawings mum had kept... man I was stupid. haha. Anyway the quilt followed art though a lifetime and its purpose, beginning as a completely free and expressive pastime, to becoming, as in any artist/designer's case, a means to live. Agendas change, having to produce art to pay the bills, and a certain amount of freedom is lost. My design followed this change through decreasing levels of colour and chaotic patchwork and mixed media. I enjoyed the childhood bit best obv cos I'm pretty much a 5 year old in my head. Maybe 5 and a half.

WHACK number 2 ermmm other things from 2007/08...

This project was titled 'Urban Twilight', based on architectural lines and perspective with colours from dusk in the city.

The next 2 are just drawings, but from a project I really enjoyed, it was our Summer project after 2nd year and I based mine around the Edinburgh Fringe which I loooove! Like the mix you get in the city between the bizarre and vibrant modern performances and displays, and the old town traditional heraldry and architecture. If I ever work out a way to win the lottery and go without sleep for a month, I would very much like to fringe it up 24/7...../31. Hoooray.

The Dastardly Dissertation

I'm nearing the end of my final dissertation which is a relief. It's about the connection between architecture and fashion, arguing that the influence of architecture can be more than aesthetic, with the integration of architectural theory within a garment. It more specifically concerns the human relationship to a home environment, and how this can be immitated within fashion, to provide comfort in uncomfortable situations, and an expansion of personal space whilst in transit, or in unfamiliar environments. Having found a chapter which pretty much sums up part of my research, I would like to say, Mr Bradley Quinn, there is no need to quake in your boots, mine will never live up to yours, but thanks for the inspiration.
The image is work of Hussein Chalayan, from his 'Between' Collection '98. I've included it in the private/ public space section of my dissertation, as the wooden pod, whilst completely concealing the model's face and head, still allows her to scrutinise of the outside world. Bit extreme but tis an interesting idea. I love Chalayan's work, think the meaning he puts into his collections is amazing, he always has something valid to say about contemporary culture. His ventriloquy collection is awesome.... sugar glass dresses, gradually destroyed by models themselves with teeenny hammers. Excellente.

Bonjour. C'est moi.

Hello! Ooft this is odd.. talking to no one... I feel a little bit.. well ..mad. Anyway. I'm Jenny Smith! I'm in my final year studying Textile Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. Degree show year... eek! I'm originally from Dumfries; well actually 9 and 3/4 miles outside it, in a little place I like to call.. field. So I'm a bit of a country lass but I feel I have adapted to city life in these 4 years, much in the same way as pigeons have; originally from rock faces, now eating from bins and the like. I feel this is already getting out of hand. So I will end my first post. Fare thee well. For now...
